The fans who had gathered at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore to witness the clash between Afghanistan and Bangladesh in the Asia Cup 2023 were left disappointed as rain played spoilsport and washed out the game. The match was called off after Bangladesh had posted 106 for 2 in 20.5 overs, with both teams sharing one point each.

Bangladesh, who had lost their opening game to Sri Lanka, needed a win to stay alive in the tournament. They won the toss and opted to bat first, hoping to put up a big total on the board. However, they got off to a shaky start as they lost their openers Mohammad Naim and Tanzid Hasan within the first six overs. Naim was caught behind off Fazalhaq Farooqi for 28, while Tanzid was bowled by Gulbadin Naib for 9.

Afghanistan, who were playing their first match of the tournament, looked sharp and disciplined with the ball. They did not allow the Bangladesh batsmen to score freely and kept them under pressure. Farooqi, Mohammad Rahman and Naib bowled with pace and accuracy, while Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan provided spin support.

However, Bangladesh’s middle order showed some resilience and fought back with a steady partnership. Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim added 67 runs for the third wicket in 14.5 overs, taking the score past 100. Shanto was the more aggressive of the two, scoring 32 off 37 balls with five fours. Rahim played a cautious knock of 33 off 54 balls with three fours.

Just when Bangladesh seemed to be gaining momentum, the rain arrived and stopped play. The umpires waited for more than an hour before deciding to abandon the match. The fans who had braved the heat and humidity were left dejected as they could not witness any further action.

Both Afghanistan and Bangladesh now have one point each from one match in Group B. They will face Nepal and India respectively in their next matches on September 4. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super Four stage of the tournament.
