West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion are two teams that have a lot in common. They both play in the Premier League, they both have blue and white as their main colours, and they both have nicknames related to birds and tools. But when they face each other on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at the Amex Stadium, they will have very different goals and motivations.
West Ham are looking to continue their impressive start to the season, having won two and drawn one of their first three games. The Hammers are currently fourth in the table, level on points with Liverpool and Tottenham, and only behind Manchester City and Arsenal on goal difference. They have scored eight goals and conceded only two, with new signing Konstantinos Mavropanos adding some solidity to their defence. Their manager, David Moyes, is still seeking his first Premier League win over Brighton, having drawn four and lost four of his previous eight meetings with the Seagulls1.
Brighton, on the other hand, are seeking to win their opening three league games for the first time since 2011-12 in the Championship2. The Seagulls have been flying high, scoring eight goals and conceding only two, with Solly March and Danny Welbeck in fine form. March is aiming to become the first Brighton player to score in the first three matches of a top-flight season2, while Welbeck has scored for Brighton in each of their past three Premier League home matches against West Ham2. Their manager, Roberto De Zerbi, has brought an exciting brand of attacking football to the south coast, with his team scoring in all of their past 18 Premier League matches2.
The history between these two teams is also interesting. Brighton have never lost to West Ham in the Premier League, winning six and drawing six of their 12 previous meetings2. The Hammers have won only once in 16 top-flight clashes with Brighton (D7, L8), a 2-1 home victory in March 19832. West Ham have registered just two away wins against the Seagulls in 15 attempts (D5, L8), with both coming in the second tier2. Brighton won this exact fixture 4-0 last season, with goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Joel Veltman, Kaoru Mitoma and Welbeck2.
So, who will come out on top this time? Will West Ham finally break their Brighton hoodoo and maintain their unbeaten run? Or will Brighton continue their perfect start and make it four wins out of four against the Hammers? Tune in to watch this exciting match live on ESPN or BBC Sport at 17:30 BST on Saturday.
